Volunteer in the Community

Are you passionate about the environment? Do you like engaging with others, sharing knowledge, and promoting learning and stewardship? Then Environmental Volunteers has the role for you!

Community and Outreach Volunteers

Love nature? Enjoy working with the public? We are looking for friendly volunteers ages 18+ who are excited to lead hands-on nature education programs. Currently, trainings are provided on a rolling basis. Please contact us to get started!

Our Community and Outreach Volunteers help deliver public programs at the EcoCenter (our nature center) and out in the community. We offer flexible schedules, so you can choose shifts that best fit your schedule. Training and support provided. It’s a lot of fun!

Currently, our EcoCenter Open Hour shifts are held outside at the Palo Alto Baylands Duck Pond and available on Fridays 10:00 am – 1:00 pm and the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month from 10 am – 1 pm. This is a great opportunity to share with visitors about the amazing ecology of the baylands.

Our Community and Outreach Volunteers also have the opportunity to be trained as Foothills Park Trail Ambassadors. Trail Ambassadors provide volunteer-led engagement of Foothills Nature Preserve visitors, expanding their knowledge and sparking interest in the park as well as providing helpful information and resources. Volunteer shifts are from 10am-2pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Beyond Baylands and Foothills park visitor engagement, our Community and Outreach volunteers have the opportunity to help with various other programs including after-school programs, guided walks, and tabling events.

Skills needed:

  • Friendly personality and great customer service skills
  • Ability to relate to people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds
  • Passion for nature, and environmental stewardship
  • Support for the EV’s mission to promote the understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science education.

These roles are perfect for volunteers who have a passion for the environment and providing a great visitor experience. No previous experience is needed and training will be provided for all successful applicants. Our training ensures that all volunteers have the necessary knowledge and skills for working with their audience, and are confident in the material they are sharing.
